Three Nights at Hotel del Coronado

海辺の宿、三泊

A Victorian beach hotel that still works for a family if you plan the room, the sand, and the walk back from the ice cream.

Three Nights at Hotel del Coronado

The Del is the white hotel with the red roof at the edge of Coronado Beach. It opened in 1888, and it is still the building you pick out from the sand: porches, a turret, palms, and the Pacific immediately west of the lawn. We stayed three nights in August, after an earlier harbor morning had convinced the kids that Coronado was “the beach with the bridge.” This time we slept there.

What we booked, and what we would book again, is a room you can walk to the beach from without crossing a parking lot after dark. August evenings stay warm, but the wind off the water picks up after dinner, so a light layer lived on the chair by the door. The historic rooms are the reason to stay, and they are not silent resort pods. You hear the building, the carts, and other families. We wanted that. If you need blackout quiet or a kitchen, say so when you reserve. The resort has more than one kind of room, and the Victorian building is the one people mean when they say they stayed at the Del.

The days were simple on purpose. Morning on Coronado Beach before the sand went hot. Midday at the pool, or in the room with wet swimsuits on the rail. Late afternoon we walked the beach back toward the hotel and let the turret be the landmark that meant we were almost done. Ice cream was a scheduled event, not a negotiation. The kids cared about the wide sand and the pier more than the architecture. We cared that the architecture was still there when we looked up.

The honest review: this is a special-occasion hotel, priced like one, and the beach is the amenity that justifies it for a family. You do not need a car for the sand, the lawn, or Orange Avenue. You do need one, or the ferry, to get back to the Embarcadero museums. Parking is part of the plan. Ask about the history tour if the adults want an hour that is not organized around snacks. It starts at the Ice House and goes into rooms most guests never see. We would return in a cooler month, book the beach side, and keep the same rule: one big outing a day, and the rest of the time sand.
